Manchester United failed with a move for goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer yesterday, because they went knocking for the Dutchman too late.

The 28-year-old, who has four caps for the Netherlands to his name, joined Feyenoord from Ajax yesterday, penning a four-year contract with the Rotterdam outfit, costing the club a fee of around €1m.

However, Vermeer could easily have been heading to link up with Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford instead.

The Red Devils came calling for the goalkeeper, according to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, but were told they had made their approach too late and Vermeer was on his way to Feyenoord.

Vermeer had not yet put pen to paper, but had agreed a contract with Feyenoord, and was not willing to break his word.

The goalkeeper also believed that heading to Manchester United he would feature little and preferred the guarantee of regular first team football at De Kuip.

Manchester United tried to bring in another goalkeeper last night, also being linked with Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
