Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasyliev has explained that Radamel Falcao wanted to leave the club to join Manchester United and the Ligue 1 outfit did not feel they could stand in his way.

Falcao completed a shock season-long loan to Manchester United last night, a deal which will see Monaco receive a €10m loan fee, while the English club also have an option to sign the striker on a permanent basis next summer for €55m.

Monaco are sad to see the former Atletico Madrid man go, but Vasyliev claims there was little point in blocking the departure of a player who wanted out.

"I am sorry for our supporters because of the departure of Radamel Falcao", he told the club's site.

"But we felt that once the player had expressed his desire to join Manchester United, it was inconsistent to block it. It is interesting to see that today the biggest clubs focus on our players", the vice-president continued.

He also stressed Monaco continue on their path regardless of Falcao's departure.

"But our project does not stop there and we'll continue to progress and give everything to have the best season.

"I wish the best for Radamel at Manchester United, but I'm sure we;ll have results this season."

Falcao has been given the number 9 shirt at Manchester United.
