Sassuolo director general Nereo Bonato has admitted that three clubs were chasing striker Leonardo Pavoletti on transfer deadline day, naming one of the sides as Championship outfit Leeds United.

Pavoletti, who scored 20 goals in 36 games at Varese in Serie B last term, has stayed put at Sassuolo, despite having several clubs on his tail.

Leeds were making the running to snap up the striker, while Cesena and Palermo were also doing their best to sign the 25-year-old before the window shut, with differing offers on the table.

Bonato explained to Tutto Mercato: "Leeds wanted to take him outright.

"Cesena and Palermo wanted him on loan."

Pavoletti will now play his football with Sassuolo in Serie A this term, though it remains to be seen if any of the sides interested in him will rekindle their admiration when the transfer window opens in January.

The striker originally joined Sassuolo in 2012 from Virtus Lanciano, but spent last term in Serie B with Varese.
