Celtic assistant boss John Collins has challenged the club's fringe players to use today's friendly match against Villarreal to push their case for a regular starting spot.

The Scottish champions have taken advantage of the international break to take on Villarreal in Spain, with the proceeds going towards the Yellow Submarine's United for Hope charity project.

As well as young talents, a number of senior Celtic players have made the trip, including Leigh Griffiths, Beram Kayal and Derk Boerrigter.

And Collins has challenged those players who feel they should be starting to produce a performance to convince him of their case.

"The young boys are going to come in and it will be a great experience for them", he told the club's site.

"They will be excited and it’s important they have that calmness about them and enjoy it.

"The experienced ones are the ones that need games as they have been subs in and around the first team so it’s an opportunity for them to show me they should be starting.

"They need their fitness so this will be good for them as well, so I’m expecting good performances all round. It’s a challenge match and the challenge is to play well and a good performance is what we are after", Collins concluded.
