Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lewis Holtby has played his first game for Hamburg after joining the Bundesliga outfit on loan this summer.

The German international made his debut in a friendly against fourth-tier club Neumunster on Thursday, starting the game, and his new manager Mirko Slomka was full of praise for the 23-year-old.

"Lewis Holtby took on responsibility straight away, played a lot of incisive passes and made an impact on the pitch", the HSV boss told the club's official site after the match, which the Red Shorts won 3-0.

Holtby is set to stay at Hamburg on loan for the season, with the agreement allowing the possibility of a permanent move at the end of the campaign.

The midfielder joined Tottenham from Schalke in January 2013 for £1.5m, but was loaned to Fulham one year later; however, he could not help the Cottagers avoid relegation last season.

With Hamburg only narrowly escaping relegation in 2013/14, Holtby will be keen to do his utmost to avoid a second consecutive demotion.
