Schalke are keen to sign striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to a new contract, but want the Dutchman to take a pay cut.

Huntelaar has just one year remaining on his contract with the Ruhr giants and was linked with Arsenal earlier this summer, despite Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt insisting the Gunners made no contact over signing the striker. Liverpool were also credited with holding an interest, Heldt admitting to have heard of the chatter.

However, Schalke are now risking losing Huntelaar by asking the Dutchman to take a pay cut to sign a new deal, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

It remains to be seen if the former Real Madrid striker will be willing to make a financial sacrifice to remain at Schalke.

And if Huntelaar does opt to leave, he is not likely to be short of suitors.

The Netherlands international has a prolific record in front of goal and regularly hits the back of the net, even in injury-hit seasons.

The 31-year-old joined Schalke in 2010 from AC Milan.
