Barcelona star Adriano believes that his team-mate Lionel Messi wasn't at his best last year, but is back to his old self this season.

The Argentine forward managed a total of 41 goals in 46 matches for the Catalan giants during the 2013/14 season, a figure that Adriano believes is not enough given his standards.

The 29-year-old, who himself has been sidelined with heart problem this year, blamed recurrent niggles as the reason for Messi not being able to give 100 per cent for his team.

"Maybe last year he wasn't 100% because he had a lot of niggles", Adriano was quoted as saying by Spanish daily Marca.

"I know exactly what that's like. Try as you might, your body can't take it any more.

"He had played a lot of football and done a lot of travelling and eventually that takes a toll on your body."

The Brazilian also took time to talk about Messi's current situation, which he thinks is perfect, adding that the player is back to his old self and will be as good as ever this season.

"We're happy to see Leo back to his old self"

The 27-year-old has featured in both of Barcelona's league matches so far, scoring two goals.
