Former Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk admits that taking up Hamburg’s offer was a mistake on his part.

The 62-year-old was sacked as the manager at HSV after a string of poor performances and just 140 days in charge last term, and the club just about managed to cling on to their top flight status at the end of the season.

The former Netherlands manager now admits that taking up the managerial post at the club was a mistake.

He revealed it was close to impossible to concentrate on the football as so much was happening around him at the Bundesliga outfit.

“Looking back I must say it was a mistake to accept the offer at HSV", Van Marwijk told Bild.

“So much was happening around me, I have never experienced anything like it.

“Concentrating on football was close to impossible. But it did happen and I am better off with that experience.”

Van Marwijk believes he might never have the stomach to take up another managerial job after his experience at Hamburg.

“I do not think I will ever sit in the dugout again as a coach. It has to be really good offer for me to reconsider my position.”

Van Marwijk has experience of managing in both Holland and Germany and under his stewardship the Dutch national team played in the World Cup final in 2010.
