Schalke have sent out a clear message that they want to keep hold of striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who is in possession of an expiring contract at the Ruhr giants, while admitting it is possible he could leave.

The prolific Dutchman, who was linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool during the summer transfer window, sees his present deal with Schalke expire in 2015 and there have been questions raised as to whether he will pen an extension.

Huntelaar's current situation has put his suitors on alert for a January bargain, but Schalke will do all they can to prevent that.

"That is our desire, but we need to talk to Klaas", chairman Clemens Tonnies told Bild, speaking about a contract to keep Huntelaar at the club for the rest of his career.

"It is also possible that he wants to once more experience a different adventure though", the Schalke supremo added.

And sporting director Horst Heldt echoed Tonnies' comments about wanting to ensure the former AC Milan and Real Madrid striker stays put, even though no concrete date has been booked for contract talks yet.

"There are no plans [to start talks] in the coming weeks, but we will speak to his management about a plan to move forward.

"Both parties intend to get together with each other for a new contract", Heldt concluded.
