Three Lions assistant Gary Neville believes that Jack Wilshere can improve in the defensive midfielder’s role for England.

Roy Hodgson used the Arsenal midfielder as the deep lying midfielder in a 4-4-2 diamond formation in England’s 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Switzerland on Monday.

Wilshere himself said earlier this week that the role is new for him, but he is eager to learn more about playing in that position.

"I looked at players who play there regularly, the best players in the world like [Andrea] Pirlo, [Javier] Mascherano and [Steven] Gerrard who play that position perfectly and I will look at them over the next few months and I will get better in that position”, the 22-year-old said.

Neville, who is part of Hodgson’s coaching set-up for England, said that Wilshere is not a natural fit for that role.

However, he feels that he did well against the Swiss and can only get better with time.

“[He is] Not a typical one [defensive midfielder] but could enjoy the role”, the former Manchester United captain said through his official Twitter account.

“For his first game there he did well and he will improve also.”
