Portugal coach Paulo Bento has stepped down from his post, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has confirmed.

The 45-year-old, who took charge of the Seleccao in 2010, extended his contract until 2016 in April.

However, Bento was under tremendous pressure after Portugal were knocked out of the group stage of the 2014 World Cup.

And the FPF decided to part ways with the former defensive midfielder following Portugal’s 1-0 loss to Albania in their opening 2016 European Championship qualifier at the weekend.

Bento’s highest point as the national coach came when he guided his side to the semi-finals of the 2012 European Championship where they lost to eventual winners Spain via penalties.
