Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew feels the club's fans are not helping the team by calling for his sacking.

Magpies' fans were vocal in calling for Pardew to be sacked from the start of Newcastle's dismal performance against Southampton today.

Newcastle were all at sea throughout the match at St. Mary's and slipped to a deserved 4-0 defeat to Ronald Koeman's men.

The club's fans made their feelings towards Pardew known, demanding the former West Ham manager be shown the door by owner Mike Ashley.

However, Pardew feels calls for his head are filtering through to the players and not helping performances on the pitch.

"It [the scrutiny] is not going to help because the performance from the start put us on the back foot", he told the BBC.

"The fans were on us from the start, on me in particular. That didn't help the situation."

The Newcastle manager does admit however that the club's fans have every right to be disheartened by the side's performances.

"The criticisms are fair. You can't get beaten 4-0 – I've had a few of those at the club.

"We have to be strong and tough it out. We have to put ourselves on the line and be brave. We have more quality than we showed today."
