Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor has saluted his side's smash-and-grab 1-0 win away at Liverpool today and revealed he was told to stop Steven Gerrard dictating the game.

Agbonlahor scored the only goal of the game in the ninth minute, capitalising on a penalty box scramble to guide the ball home.

It was Aston Villa's only shot on target throughout the match, but they did not need another as Liverpool could not break them down, even with 75 per cent possession.

Liverpool, who also had just one shot on target, struggled to get going throughout and Agbonlahor was quick to salute a tactical plan which clearly worked.

"We came here with tactics to frustrate Liverpool and nick a goal", he told Sky Sports.

"That was my job [to stop Gerrard] today and try and frustrate him.

"I think everyone knows what Steven Gerrard can do on the ball and you can't give him that much space."

Aston Villa's win means they have now taken ten points from their first four games and sit second in the table.
