Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere believes the Gunners have an opportunity to send out a Champions League message against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening.

Arsene Wenger's men head to Germany to open their Champions League group push and are aiming to strike an early blow against Dortmund, who are expected to be their main opposition in a group which also includes Anderlecht and Galatasaray.

Wilshere believes the Gunners need to avoid defeat, while he is also eyeing a potential victory and the statement of intent that would send out to their Champions League rivals.

"It's a tough game and we go there first this time, so the hardest match of the group will be the first one", the England international told his club's site, looking towards the Dortmund game.

"We can put a marker down in that game to say we're here to win this group. Even if we don't win the game, we don't want to lose it."

Wilshere is aware that Dortmund are missing a number of first team regulars, even though he sure that any team Jurgen Klopp selects will be bristling with quality.

"The main one missing for them is [Marco] Reus, he's fantastic. I've watched him over the last few years and he's got better and better. Now he's one of the best players, if not the best player, in Germany so they'll miss him.

"But they've got quality players who can come in and they've made a good start to the season."
