Jack Wilshere has warned Arsenal that they must take no chances with their Champions League campaign this season by failing to top their group.

The Gunners have failed to top their group in recent years and paid the price with tough draws in the Round of 16 after Christmas, notably facing Bayern Munich last season.

It is a mistake Wilshere is desperate for them not to make again this year, as they go up against Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray and Anderlecht in Group D.

"That's the target – we've always said that", Wilshere told his club's site, speaking about top spot in the group.

"Over the last few seasons we've always thought we'd finish top and then we lost the last game and it has cost us.

"If you finish top you can still get a tough game – once you're in the last 16 of the Champions League you're not going to get an easy match.

"But we've been unlucky with the draw, getting Bayern Munich over the last few years. They were the best team in Europe.

"We could have got anyone else and had a little bit more of a chance going of going through so it is really important to finish top of the group", the England international concluded.

Arsenal, who drew 2-2 with Manchester City on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium, start their Champions League group push on Tuesday evening away in Germany against Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund.
