Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans has blasted the English Football Association over their handling of Daniel Sturridge, who picked up an injury while on international duty with England.

Sturridge picked up a thigh injury in training for the Three Lions and is looking at up to three weeks out of action for the Reds. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was quick to criticise the FA, noting that Sturridge would have had a recovery day had he been in the same situation at Anfield.

His absence was notable yesterday as Liverpool slipped to a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa at Anfield, looking toothless up front.

And Evans is disappointed with the way Sturridge has been handled by England, even though he does believe following a summer spending spree in excess of £100m the Reds should have the squad depth to cover the striker's injury.

"I'm very disappointed Daniel Sturridge is not fit and very disappointed the way he's come back injured from the international set-up", Evans told LFC TV.

"That sounds like something very unprofessional at the end of the day. In this day and age that's not usually the case.

"It happens, but at the same time now we've got a squad big enough to take on all these competitions. We've just got to be a bit sharper", the former Liverpool boss concluded.

Liverpool added strikers Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli to their ranks over the summer, but while both featured against Aston Villa, neither were able to make a crucial breakthrough for the Reds.
