Spartak Moscow president Leonid Fedun has revealed that the club's winger Quincy Promes could have joined Manchester United ahead of the Russian giants.

Fedun welcomed Promes to the Russian capital from FC Twente earlier this summer, with Spartak Moscow having paid a hefty €15m to secure his signature.

The 22-year-old has wasted no time in making an impression at his new club and created two goals in Spartak Moscow's 3-1 win over Torpedo Moscow this weekend.

Fedun is struggling to contain his delight at snapping up Promes, especially because Louis van Gaal, who handed the player his Netherlands debut this year, wanted to take the Dutchman to Manchester United.

"He was our highest priority", the club owner told reporters.

"He also had an offer from Manchester United in his hand, but he chose us."

And Fedun is expecting much from the winger as he continues to develop at the club.

"He has the potential to become one of the leaders at Spartak Moscow", he added.
