Tottenham Hotspur have named French defender Younes Kaboul as their new club captain, rewarding the former Portsmouth man for his standing at White Hart Lane.

The position was up for grabs following the departure of Michael Dawson to Hull City earlier this summer. And Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has chosen Kaboul as his successor.

It is a decision Pochettino is pleased to make, telling the club's site: "Younes has shown me all the values needed to be a captain.

"He has the character to lead this team as well as the respect of his team-mates."

Kaboul himself has been quick to express his delight at the honour of being thrown the skipper's armband by Pochettino.

He said: "I am delighted to have been given this responsibility. To follow in the footsteps of some of the legendary captains that have represented this football club is a fantastic honour.

"It is a great achievement for me on a personal level and I hope to help lead this team to great things in the future."

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and striker Emmanuel Adebayor have been named vice-captains.
