Cesc Fabregas has explained that Chelsea’s 4-2 win over Swansea City on Saturday was “very important”, especially after fellow Premier League aspirants Manchester City and Arsenal played out a 2-2 draw earlier in the day.

The draw at the Emirates Stadium, coupled with Chelsea’s win, helped Jose Mourinho’s side to remain at the top of the table with 12 points from four games.

The Blues, who are yet to drop points this season, are now five and six points ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal respectively.

Presently, Chelsea’s nearest challengers are Aston Villa, who defeated Liverpool 1-0 at the weekend, with 10 points from four fixtures, though Paul Lambert's men are not tipped to fight the Blues for the title.

And Fabregas, who admitted that the season is still relatively new, was however pleased after his side managed to take advantage of their rivals’ slip-ups.

“Obviously we wanted three points as usual, but the more we take advantage of our rivals the better”, the Spaniard told his club’s official site.

“We know it doesn’t mean much because there is still a long way to go but we knew [before the game] Manchester City and Arsenal had dropped points so it was very important.”

Chelsea will now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they will face German outfit Schalke on Wednesday to kick off their group stage campaign.
