Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that Arsenal lack the mental strength to beat the big teams and win the Champions League.

It is Arsenal’s 16th consecutive season in the Champions League group stage, but their best result is an appearance in the final in the 2005/06 campaign against eventual winners Barcelona.

Scholes, who won the Champions League twice as a player, feels that Arsenal are always good enough to qualify for the knockout rounds, but they have never won the competition.

The former Manchester United man has questioned Arsenal’s mental capability to handle the big games against the big teams. He believes that Arsenal’s mental fragility is holding the club back from doing well in the Champions League.

"They always qualify and always seem to get through the group”, the former England man told ITV.

“The only problem with Arsenal is when they meet top teams, they don’t seem to have the consistent level of mental strength to get through it.”

Arsenal have been knocked out of the competition in the Round of 16 for the last four years and tonight kick off their group stage campaign by taking on Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
