Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has expressed his delight following Christian Benteke’s return to training yesterday.

The striker, who underwent a light training session last evening, ruptured his Achilles tendon while training in April.

Benteke was sidelined for the remainder of the Villains’ 2013/14 season and also subsequently missed Belgium’s World Cup campaign.

And Lambert, who lauded Villa’s medical staff for getting Benteke fit quickly, however explained that the forward is still some way off from becoming match fit.

"I'm delighted with the efforts of the medical team here at Villa for working incredibly hard with Christian to get him back to fitness so quickly”, the manager told his club’s official site.

"Christian trained today [Monday], though it was a light session.

"Hopefully, with no effects from that, he'll train again tomorrow with the group.

"Obviously, we'll be monitoring his fitness and we'll continue to build him up towards a return to the team."

Benteke, who has a further three years left on his present deal with Aston Villa, has thus far amassed 67 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 34 goals and providing 10 assists.

The 23-year-old has 17 caps and six goals for Belgium, and has also represented the nation at various youth levels.
