Liverpool are still a work in progress, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has stressed, following his side's 2-1 win over Ludogorets in the Champions League.

It was a nervy night at Anfield for the hosts, who were forced to wait until the 82nd minute for Mario Balotelli to give them the lead, the Italian controlling the ball in the box and steering it past the Ludogorets goalkeeper.

However, the Bulgarians scored in the 90th minute, appearing to have secured a draw, but a controversial penalty was awarded to Liverpool in injury time, Steven Gerrard slotting it home.

For Rodgers, the three points were the most important thing.

"It's a competition that is about winning games and sometimes you'll play well and maybe not get a result. It was always going to be a tricky tie for us because they're the champions of their country and there are not too many bad teams in this competition", he said via his club's site.

Rodgers also stressed that from his point of view Liverpool are not at the level they were last season due to a number of new arrivals and should be classed as a work in progress.

"We can do no more than win tonight. We're not at a standard that we were last season; we've got a lot of adaptation going on with new players coming in, and even though they fit the profile of how we work, it's still a new team", the Northern Irishman said.

"We're still a work in progress but while we do that, it's important that we can win games. To win in the Champions League is always good."
