Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Mario Balotelli can be Liverpool’s trump card this season in the Champions League.

The Reds signed the Italian international last month from AC Milan for a transfer fee of £16m on a four-year contract.

The 24-year-old has Champions League experience with AC Milan, Inter and Manchester City and is expected to lead Liverpool’s frontline tonight against Ludogorets Razgrad.

The Reds sold their talismanic striker Luis Suarez, who scored 31 league goals last season, this summer to Barcelona.

However, Scholes believes Balotelli has the ability to replace Suarez’s goalscoring instincts and provide much needed teeth to the Liverpool attack.

"He's [Suarez] a great player, but don’t forget they’ve signed Balotelli who on his day, can be a match winner too", the former Manchester United midfielder told ITV.

Balotelli is yet to open his account for Liverpool, but has seven Champions League goals to his name.

The Reds are making a comeback in Europe’s elite club competition after a five-year absence.
