Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has admitted his side have "a lot to learn" after they squeaked past Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the Champions League tonight.

The Reds grabbed a 2-1 win courtesy of a late, late penalty which Gerrard converted, securing an opening group stage three points for Liverpool after a nervy evening.

The Bulgarian outfit were a threat throughout, hitting the post and causing Liverpool a number of scares before Mario Balotelli handed the Reds the lead.

Ludogorets hit back, but Gerrard converted a penalty in injury time to make sure of the victory. However, the Liverpool captain admits his side must get to grips with the Champions League.

"We did OK but it wasn't better than OK. There's a lot to learn, we were caused problems on the counter-attack", Gerrard told ITV.

"You have to give Mario Balotelli credit, it didn't go his way for long periods but the sign of a good goalscorer is to keep going and get a chance.

"What's more important is his work rate."

And Gerrard is now looking towards Liverpool's next Champions League game against Basel before they lock horns with Real Madrid in a double header.

"If we win in Basel now it puts us in a good position but we must do better."
