Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has claimed that garnering his colleagues’ appreciation means more to him than winning the Golden Ball at the World Cup.

Robben played a pivotal role in the Netherlands finishing third in the World Cup and scored three crucial goals for his country.

However, he missed out on winning the Golden Ball, the award given to the best player of the tournament, to Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

But the Dutchman refused to complain about missing out on the award and said that he received enough appreciation from people in the game for his performances.

He added that those congratulatory messages were more important to him than winning the Golden Ball in Brazil.

“I will never sell myself and say that I deserved that award”, Robben told Sport/Voetbalmagazine.

“I received a lot of appreciation and complements from big names and colleagues saying ‘you deserved the award and you were by far the best player in the World Cup’.

“Those compliments mean more to me than any award.”

Robben was also nominated for the European Footballer of the Year award, but he missed out to Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I didn’t win, I will make no drama. Life moves on”, he said about losing out on the European Footballer of the Year accolade.

The Dutchman has scored 26 goals in 82 appearances for the Netherlands
