Newcastle hitman Siem de Jong has confirmed that he will be on crutches for six weeks before his rehabilitation process starts.

The Dutchman joined Newcastle this summer from Ajax for a transfer fee of around £8m and was expected to lead their attack this season.

However, after making only three appearances for the club, De Jong suffered a thigh injury in training earlier this month and is expected to be out for a lengthy period of time.

"For now I must spend the first six weeks on crutches", De Jong told the Algemeen Dagblad.

The Newcastle medical team believe that the total rehabilitation process will take at least three months, which means that the Dutchman is out until this winter.

Manager Alan Pardew is already under pressure to produce results as the club are rooted to the bottom of the league, but with De Jong’s injury, Newcastle are lacking a cutting edge in front of goal.

The Englishman also allowed mercurial French winger Hatem Ben Arfa to join Hull City on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day.
