Steven Gerrard has backed Mario Balotelli to score “many” goals for Liverpool after the striker netted in his side’s 2-1 win over Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League last night.

The Italian international, who joined the Merseyside club from AC Milan during the summer transfer window, scored his first goal in Liverpool colours in the 81st minute at Anfield.

Although Liverpool won the match when Gerrard scored a penalty after the visitors equalised through Dani Abalo in injury time, the Liverpool skipper was full of praise for Balotelli.

The midfielder, who lauded the former Manchester City forward’s work ethic and attitude against the Bulgarian outfit, was also impressed with Balotelli’s neat finish.

"I think [the goal] will be the first of many. I thought he worked his socks off tonight”, Gerrard told his club’s official site.

"Sometimes, when it's not going a striker's way, they sulk and they give up, but he was relentless tonight.

“He stayed in there and the one good chance that came his way, he took it. I thought it was a great finish."

Balotelli, who failed to score in his first two Liverpool appearances, has experience of winning the Champions League with his former employers Inter Milan.
