Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez has revealed that he is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

The Argentine winger confirmed he underwent surgery earlier this year after the tumour was discovered and is now undergoing chemotherapy.

The 33-year-old said that he first felt the problem last year, but after the wrong diagnosis, an ultrasound scan detected the tumour.

"When I was told I had cancer, I went home in tears”, the Argentine told TyC Sports.

"In May 2013, I felt very tough pains on my testicle. After some wrong diagnosis, an ultrasound detected the tumour.”

The winger confirmed that he is bearing the costs for his treatment despite being a contracted Newcastle United player.

"I came here and I assumed the costs despite having a contract with Newcastle. Money is not important. What is important is my health. I had to start chemotherapy."

Gutierrez joined Newcastle from Mallorca in July 2008 and played a crucial role in the club returning to the Premier League in his second season with the Magpies. He spent the latter half of last term on loan at Norwich City.
