Former Arsenal striker John Hartson feels his old team-mate, Steve Bould, must be cringing at the Gunners' defensive display against Borussia Dortmund last night.

Bould, who is assistant manager to Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, watched as the Gunners were all at sea, being overwhelmed by Dortmund in Germany and heading home to England lucky to have only lost 2-0 in the Champions League encounter.

Hartson believes that Bould, who is a former centre-back, must have been left fuming by the inept defensive display he witnessed.

And the ex-Arsenal striker urged Bould to solve the problem.

"Without overreacting, it was a really woeful defensive performance from Arsenal", Hartson told BBC Radio 5 live.

"Steve Bould has been given the assistant manager role, and he should be going into there and sorting it out at the back.

"He must be looking at his side's defending and cringing", the former striker added.

Arsenal will next lock horns with Galatasaray in their Champions League group next month.

Before then the Gunners face Premier League games against Aston Villa and Tottenham, along with a League Cup clash against Southampton.
