Chelsea defender John Terry has insisted that finishing as group toppers is what his team will aim for in the Champions League this season.

The Pensioners were held to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of Group G against German outfit Schalke at Stamford Bridge last night, to kick off their European campaign on a disappointing note.

However, drawing reference from last year's performance, when they lost their first group stage match against Basel and yet went on to top the group, Terry added that there is no reason why they cannot repeat the same performance yet again.

"We lost our first Champions League game last season and we came back to win the group and go through", Terry told his club's official site.

"We’ve got some tough games coming up but that’s our aim again."

He also took time to criticise the way his team conceded the goal, even after having played so well from the outset of the season.

"The first four league games we’ve been killing teams off.

"Tonight we didn’t do it but it was disappointing to concede the way we did, from a counter-attack from our own corner."
