Gervinho believes that Roma have the quality to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Giallorossi thrashed CSKA Moscow 5-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in Roma in a Champions League Group E clash last night to start their European campaign in style.

The former Arsenal man, who joined Roma last summer, himself scored a brace in a statement-making performance by the Serie A side against the Russians.

In the other Group E clash, Bayern Munich registered a narrow 1-0 win over Manchester City through a last gasp winner by Jerome Boateng.

Gervinho feels Roma have the quality to qualify for the Round of 16 despite being placed in a group that contains the champions of both England and Germany.

“Roma can go a long way”, the former Arsenal man told UEFA.

“We have an objective, to qualify for the knockout stages, and we hope we can make it.”

Gervinho admits that Bayern Munich and Manchester City are strong opponents, but he has faith in Roma’s ability to triumph against the odds and emerge as one of the two teams to survive the group.

“Manchester City and Bayern are very strong clubs with good teams and the games against both of them are going to be very difficult, but I have faith in our side and I believe we will qualify.

"But we have got a lot of respect for Bayern and Manchester City.”
