Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has backed Jordan Henderson to lead the club in the coming years.

The England international, who joined the Reds from Sunderland in 2011, was appointed Liverpool’s new vice-captain on Monday, following his  impressive displays at both international and club level in recent times; Henderson has succeeded Daniel Agger in the role.

Gerrard feels Henderson deserves the vice-captaincy role and backed the 24-year-old to succeed him as Liverpool’s next skipper once he retires.

"It's very well deserved and it's no surprise to me", he told Liverpool’s official site.

"I'm sure he'll be the main man – the club captain – in a few years when I have gone.”

Gerrard, who praised Henderson’s work-ethic both on and off the field, further explained that his newly appointed understudy is a “top” player and that he “leads by example.”

"He epitomises everything that a captain is. He works hard on and off the pitch”, he added.

“He's well-liked in the dressing room. He leads by example and, let's not forget, he's a top player as well."

Henderson, who has a further two years left on his present contract with Liverpool, has thus far amassed 137 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 13 times.

The battling midfielder has 14 caps for England and also represented the nation at various youth levels.
