Cardiff City have confirmed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has departed the club by mutual consent.

Solskjaer had been under pressure after Cardiff suffered two consecutive home defeats, while his 25 games in charge of the Bluebirds yielded just five wins.

The Welsh club, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, said in a statement: "Cardiff City Football Club wishes to confirm that Ole Gunnar Solskjær has stepped down from his position of first team manager with immediate effect today following recent discussions."

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan claimed that he had been advised to part ways with Solskjaer following the club's relegation, but held firm, a position he can no longer maintain following a poor start to the new season.

"Ole was hired by Cardiff City on our understanding and belief that he would help us fight relegation from the Barclays Premier League. Unfortunately that did not happen. After the club was relegated many people advised me to let him go, but I decided to keep Ole on for the Championship season. Regrettably our recent results do not justify Ole’s continued role as manager at Cardiff", Tan said.

"Ole has therefore decided to step down and I have accepted this. During my short association with Ole, I have found him to be an honest and hardworking professional, but unfortunately the football results were not in his favour. As long as I am the owner of this club, Ole and his family will always be welcome in the Chairman’s Suite as my guests. I wish Ole the very best in his future career in football. We now begin the process of finding his replacement and working towards giving all our stakeholders in Cardiff City the results they deserve."

Solskjaer, a former Manchester United striker, cut his managerial teeth with the Red Devils reserve team before heading home to Norway to take charge at Molde.

He led Molde to two successive Norwegian titles and a Norwegian Cup before his appointment as Cardiff boss eight and a half months ago.
