QPR boss Harry Redknapp has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur turned down an offer for midfielder Sandro from Zenit St. Petersburg which was in excess of the sum he paid to snap up the Brazilian this summer.

Redknapp, who knows Sandro well from his time in charge of Spurs, made his move to snap up the Brazilian midfielder on transfer deadline day, pushing the deal over the line for a fee believed to have been around the £10m mark.

Sandro had been linked with leaving White Hart Lane throughout the summer, with Italian outfit Napoli one of the sides keenest on his signature.

But Redknapp revealed that Andre Villas-Boas, another former Tottenham manager, wanted to take Sandro to Zenit – but failed with his bid, despite it being more than QPR eventually paid for the player.

Speaking at a press conference today, Redknapp said: "I was surprised [that we could sign him], yes. I think Tottenham turned down a big offer from Zenit before the start of the season; four or five million more than we paid for him."

And the QPR boss was quick to reaffirm his delight at having captured the former Internacional man, who he has tipped to do great things during the course of his spell at Loftus Road.

"I couldn't be more pleased to have him.

"I think he'll be a big player here."
