Two-time European champion and world champion Xavi is ready to play a bit part role in Luis Enrique’s Barcelona team.

Xavi made his first start for the Catalan giants this season in Barcelona’s 1-0 win over APOEL Nicosia last night in a Champions League group game.

However, the Spaniard insisted that he is happy to play a bit part role and will help the team in whatever capacity he is called upon to perform.

The Barcelona midfielder equalled former Real Madrid striker Raul’s all-time record of Champions League appearances with 142 against APOEL.

"I am happy. When my turn to play comes I will try to be useful", Xavi was quoted as saying by FIFA.

The Spaniard admits that Barcelona found it difficult to break down a resolute APOEL defence last night and only a Gerard Pique header allowed them to spare their blushes.

He further added that getting all three points was crucial as it was important for the Blaugrana to start well in their Champions League campaign.

"We struggled. We tried to move the ball quickly and we didn't manage to do it", he added.

"It is true we dominated. We tried through the middle and wide, but they defended very well.

“In the end it was a tiring game, but we have won and we have to treat it like it is. It is always good to start the group stage with three points."

In the other Group F clash Paris Saint-German were held to a 1-1 draw by Ajax.
