Former Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg believes that the FA Cup triumph for the Gunners last season brought much needed relief to the players.

After winning the FA Cup in 2005, beating Manchester United in the final on penalties, the club had to wait for nine long years for their next trophy.

In a nervy final, the Gunners held their nerve to beat Hull City 3-2 to lift the FA Cup in May this year and end their long trophy drought.

Ljungberg admits that the club were under pressure to end their nine-year long trophy drought as they have been so successful throughout their history.

The Swede feels that that the FA Cup triumph brought a sense of relief as the players were under pressure to end the club’s barren run.

“The club has won so much so the longer it gets without winning something, the more the pressure increases from the outside”, Ljungberg told the club’s official site.

“I think the FA Cup this year brought relief for the players and everyone within the club to win something. I think we deserved it.”

Ljungberg believes that the arrival of quality players this summer means Arsenal are finally in a position to challenge for the league title again this season.

“Now we’ve done some shopping in the summer so let’s hope we can be even stronger this season and challenge for the Premier League title. There’s a lot of excitement all around the club at present.”

Ljungberg won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups in his time at Arsenal.
