Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has played down suggestions that the Red Devils are ready to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, who left Manchester United to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, has been linked with returning to the club he still harbours strong feelings towards.

However, despite the media speculating Ronaldo could be on his way back to Manchester United soon, Van Gaal has played down the suggestion, even while holding the door open by hinting he is always in the market for world-class stars.

"It's always a discussion in the papers and I don't think the media shall buy Ronaldo. I don't think Real Madrid shall sell", the Dutchman explained to a press conference today.

"When it is possible, what I said with [Radamel] Falcao, players like Ronaldo give a lot extra to a squad or to a team, but I don't think Real Madrid shall sell him."

Van Gaal also took time to reflect on his side's 4-0 drubbing of QPR at Old Trafford last weekend, continuing to bask in the afterglow.

The Dutchman commented: "Of course the result was very good; I think 4-0 is a big result, but also the way we have played [means] I think the fans enjoyed themselves."

Van Gaal's side are next in action this Sunday when they lock horns with Premier League new boys Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

The Dutchman also confirmed he has Chris Smalling back from injury, leaving him with "only six injuries now so it's good."
