Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton has thanked assistant manager Roy Keane for his role in lifting up the standard of training at Villa Park.

The Manchester United legend took up the role of assisting manager Paul Lambert this summer, while also continuing in the same capacity for the Republic of Ireland.

And according to the 29-year-old, Keane has been instrumental in lifting up the spirits of the players in training since assuming the role with the club.

"Roy's lifted the standard in training and he'll let you know if that standard drops", Hutton was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Speaking on the issue of whether the 43-year-old's temper can work as a useful push for the Villans, Hutton said: "I think so. It keeps you on your toes."

The Scottish defender however was quick to clarify that Lambert remains top dog at Villa Park, with Keane's presence not changing that fact.

"But everyone knows who the manager is and no one has ever questioned that."

The Midlands giants have won three of their opening four matches in the Premier League, including a headline-grabbing victory at Anfield against Liverpool, and are currently placed second in the table with 10 points.
