Arsene Wenger has delivered a bleak assessment of Mathieu Debuchy's ankle injury, revealing the Frenchman could miss up to three months.

Debuchy hurt his ankle against Manchester City and needed to be carried off the Emirates Stadium pitch on a stretcher.

He duly missed Arsenal's Champions League defeat against Borussia Dortmund and is now due to have his ankle looked at tonight.

And Wenger admits the minimum Debuchy will be out for is six weeks, while stressing if the ankle investigation is bad news it could be even longer.

"He has an exploration of his ankle on Friday night and they go in and look how the ligament is damaged, and after that we know if he does need surgery", Wenger said via his club's site.

"If he doesn’t, it’ll be six weeks, if he does need surgery it’ll be three months. At the moment we don’t know."

Wenger was also without another right-back, Calum Chambers, for the defeat to Dortmund.

However, the young defender is back in the Arsenal squad for this weekend's Aston Villa clash.
