Malaga left-back Vitorino Antunes has popped onto Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's radar, with the Frenchman plotting a possible swoop for the Portuguese defender in January.

La Liga side Malaga snapped up Antunes on a permanent deal last summer, following a loan spell, from Portuguese outfit Pacos de Ferreira.

The defender was linked with West Ham in the summer, but Malaga fought hard to keep hold of his services.

Now, according to Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, Arsenal are looking closely at the possibility of signing Antunes.

Should the Gunners snap up the 27-year-old it would place a question mark over Spanish left-back Nacho Monreal, who is known to be wanted by Athletic Bilbao.

Antunes started his career in the youth ranks at Portuguese minnows Freamunde.

The defender joined Pacos de Ferreira in 2006, then switching to Roma in 2007, initially on loan.

Antunes struggled to establish himself at the Italian giants and was sent out on a series of loan spells before rejoining Pacos de Ferreira in 2012.
