Liverpool are "nowhere near" the level expected, manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted.

Rodgers, who presided over a £100m plus summer spending spree on new players designed to improve on Liverpool's second place finish in the Premier League last term, saw his side go down 3-1 away at West Ham today.

It was the Reds' third loss in their opening five Premier League games and came hot on the heels of a hard-fought 2-1 Champions League win over Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets in midweek, which needed a last-minute penalty.

And Rodgers openly admits Liverpool are not living up to expectations at present.

Speaking after the West Ham defeat, Rodgers told the BBC: "Overall we never showed the composure that is related to this team. We didn't start well.

"It was disappointing. We knew this would be a tough game but we were 2-0 down before we started. I thought we reacted well but we were risking the game at the end and unfortunately for us it was a day of too many mistakes.

"We're nowhere near the levels we expect to be at. The expectancy is raised for us after the last few seasons but at this moment in time we are not there. We will continue to work hard. We'll look to bounce back."
