Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt believes that his team need to take the League Cup on "a game by game basis" in order to progress in the tournament.

The Black Cats reached the final of the tournament last year, where they lost 3-1 to Manchester City to suffer heartbreak, but could look back on a positive spell which saw Manchester United beaten in the semi-final.

And as they prepare to take on Stoke City in a third round tie of the tournament on Tuesday, the 24-year-old believes that his team have no other option but to win the match and progress to the next round.

"The club reached the final last year so it will be an important game for us to progress to the next round", the former Chelsea player told his club's official site.
