Wayne Rooney admits that Manchester United didn’t keep their heads while they were ahead against Leicester City yesterday.

The Red Devils collapsed to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Leicester at the King Power Stadium after they were cruising 3-1 midway through the second half.

Rooney admits that the game was there to be won, but Manchester United didn’t show enough composure when they were ahead.

The forward was visibly fuming at his team-mates when Esteban Cambiasso scored the equaliser in the 64th minute.

“We're all really disappointed, especially after going 3-1 up”, the club captain told MUTV.

“We should have seen the game off, and we should have kept the ball better. We didn't do that, we made a few mistakes and it has cost us.”

Rooney conceded that Leicester’s direct approach was unsettling for the Red Devils defence, but he believes that mistakes on their part played a major role in yesterday’s result.

“Leicester played a lot of long balls and we struggled a little bit with those. Overall, it wasn't good enough as a team.

“We played some good stuff at times and scored some great goals, but we made too many mistakes as a team and have to do better.”

While 3-1 ahead, Manchester United’s Rafael conceded a penalty which was duly converted by David Nugent in the 62nd minute and Rooney believes that was the turning point of the match.

“We gave away a sloppy goal straight after we got our second", rued Rooney. "That lifted the crowd, but we have to do better. It's bitterly disappointing that we didn't.”

Manchester United host West Ham next Saturday at Old Trafford and Rooney will be expecting a better defensive performance from his team-mates.
