West Ham co-chairman David Gold has revealed the club have suffered an injury blow, with Cheikhou Kouyate looking at an extended spell on the sidelines.

The defender-cum-midfielder was forced off through injury in West Ham's 3-1 win over Liverpool at Upton Park on Saturday.

The Senegal international underwent a scan today and the news has not been positive for the Hammers, despite Gold earlier admitting he thought the summer signing would be fine.

Gold said via his Twitter account: "Bad news. C Kouyate will be out for 6 weeks.

"He will probably miss 5 games and might be available for Aston Villa at home 8 Nov."

West Ham, who have made a bright start to the season, snapped up Kouyate from Belgian giants Anderlecht in the summer.

Now boss Sam Allardyce will have to make do with his services for the club's next five games.
