Former Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit has taken aim at Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal and dubbed his team construction at Old Trafford "crazy".

Gullit paid close attention while Van Gaal's men saw a 3-1 lead at Leicester City collapse on Sunday, with the Red Devils ultimately going down to a 5-3 defeat to the Premier League new boys.

Manchester United's attacking force, boasting Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria, looked potent, but the club's defence was all at sea.

And Gullit simply cannot fathom why Van Gaal has gone about constructing the team from back to front, comparing the job of building a side to that of building a house.

"I think it is crazy", Gullit bemoaned to Dutch broadcaster NOS.

"When you build a house, you still start with the foundations, yes?

"But Van Gaal has started with the roof.

"So then it crumbles. I really do not get it. I really do not understand why he did not start with the defence."

Manchester United lost a number of seasoned defenders over the summer, with Rio Ferdinand, club captain Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all ending lengthy associations with the club.

Van Gaal's men have so far won just one of their opening five Premier League games and sit 12th with five points.
