Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Abou Diaby will start in his side’s League Cup encounter against Southampton tonight.

The Frenchman, who has been plagued by injuries in recent years, was sidelined for the majority of the 2013/14 campaign with anterior cruciate ligament damage.

Diaby made just one appearance last season, when he came on as a late substitute in his side’s final Premier League game of the season against Norwich City.

The midfielder played a full game for the Gunners’ Under-21 side last week, and Wenger feels that Diaby is now fit to start against the Saints at the Emirates Stadium.

The manager further added that Diaby deserves a “lot of respect” for not giving up and coming back every time from his injuries.

"He is a giant, mentally", Wenger was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"To do what he has done, coming back every time from the severe injuries he has had, deserves a lot of respect.

"He played 90 minutes for the Under-21s last week and will play against Southampton."
