Arsene Wenger has dispelled any injury fears over Abou Diaby and revealed the Frenchman being substituted this evening was simply down to him being tired.

Arsenal threw Diaby into tonight's League Cup clash against Southampton at the Emirates Stadium, the French midfielder continuing his comeback from an injury plagued year.

And Wenger, who pulled Diaby off in the 67th minute, replacing him with Santi Cazorla, explained the Arsenal man was just tired.

"It was difficult for him but he got 60 minutes and he was not injured", Wenger explained via his club's feed.

"He was acceptable but tired", the Arsenal boss added.

The game saw Arsenal crash out of the League Cup 2-1 to Ronald Koeman's men, despite opening the scoring with a superb free-kick from Alexis Sanchez.

Goals from Dusan Tadic (penalty) and Nathaniel Clyne proved too much for the Gunners to overcome, meaning it is the Saints who head into the League Cup Fourth Round draw.
