Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert wants to be given an opportunity to build a partnership with fellow summer signing Mario Balotelli.

Lambert joined the Reds this summer from Southampton, while Balotelli followed him through the Anfield entrance, costing Liverpool a cool £16m to recruit from AC Milan.

Striker Daniel Sturridge is currently out injured, but it was Fabio Borini and not Lambert who got the vote to play alongside Balotelli in Liverpool's weekend defeat at West Ham.

Lambert is set to start tonight as the Reds play Middlesbrough in the League Cup and he is firm in his belief that he should be given a crack at forming a partnership with Balotelli.

"I believe that unless you give the partnership a try, you don't really know how it's going to work", he told his club's site.

"Each individual has different aspects to their game. But we can all adapt.

"We can all adapt to each other. I'm sure any partnership that we have striker-wise at the club will do fine."

Lambert has yet to net for Liverpool, despite making four appearances for the club in the Premier League.
