Liverpool have moved closer to realising their plans to expand their Anfield home after Liverpool City Council's Planning Committee granted planning permission today.

The Reds are aiming to redevelop Anfield's Main Stand to take its capacity up to 21,000 and increasing the overall capacity of the stadium to around 54,000.

Liverpool have also proposed to increase the Anfield Road Stand by a further 4,800.

The council's planning committee has now granted permission, subject to conditions and legal agreement, allowing work to begin early next year with the aim of work being completed by the 2016/17 campaign.

Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre said via his club's site: "Today's approval by the Planning Committee is another step on our journey which we embarked on nearly two years ago.

"We received very positive support for our proposals during a public consultation exercise earlier this year and whilst we are delighted about the progress made today, there are still some steps that we need to navigate through in order to give us the certainty that we need to proceed with our expansion plans", he added.

Liverpool had originally intended to build a brand new stadium on a new site under their previous owners, but the present owners, Fenway Sports Group, favour redevelopment of Anfield.
