Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has refused to comment on reports linking Everton playmaker Ross Barkley with a move to the Etihad Stadium next summer.

It has been suggested that the Sky Blues could target Everton's highly-rated youngster to bolster their number of homegrown players.

But the Chilean manager insists that talk they are ready to bid for Barkley is wide of the mark as his team are not trying to add anyone to the squad at the moment due to UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations.

"I think for the moment I will give you the same answer as ever – we don't talk about rumours", Pellegrini was quoted as saying by the BBC, when asked about Barkley.

"We are not trying to add anyone to the squad at this moment.

"And we have important restrictions on the amount of money we can spend."

The Citizens take on Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in a League Cup third round tie on Wednesday.

The defending league champions have failed to secure a single win in their last three league matches and are currently placed sixth in the table with eight points from five matches. Pellegrini will hope they can record a morale-boosting win over the Owls.
